President Peruggi Hosts Luncheon for Kingsborough’s First Graduates – Members of The Class of 1966

Kingsborough President Regina Peruggi joins members of the class of 1966.

On November 22, Kingsborough Community College (KCC) president Regina Peruggi hosted a luncheon for 16 members of KCC’s first graduating class—the class of 1966.

In fall of 1964, the visiting alumni were part of the first 438  students admitted  after the City Planning Commission approved the establishment of KCC at Manhattan beach.  The students were served by 39 faculty members.

In the absence of a college campus, the college opened at two locations: former Public School 98 on Avenue Z in the Sheepshead Bay area and a Masonic Temple located at the corner of Clermont and Lafayette Avenues in Mid-Brooklyn.

The former maritime station at Manhattan Beach, which was made available by the federal government, became        the site for the permanent campus of KCC and replaced the two temporary locations.

President Peruggi welcomed the alumni back to campus and talked with them extensively about how far the college has come since they were students here more than 44 years ago.

Korean Students Study Abroad in Kingsborough’s College For Kids Program

This summer, Kingsborough Community College (KCC) Office of Continuing Education enrolled six College For Kids (CFK) students exclusively selected from their school in South Korea to study abroad at KCC.

The six students, four boys and two girls, with an average age of 11 , are some of the top students at their school in Korea: Sang Kwon Lee (“Steven”), Jung Yoon Choi (“Lyn”), Sung Jae Bae (“Brian”), Yong Hyun Uhm (“Tom”), Young Hyeong Choi (“James”), and Jung Min Sin (“Jenny”).

The excited students traveled to Brooklyn with their Korean teacher, Ms. Rachel Han, to improve their English language skills and experience American culture.

Ms. Han said, “The students learn English in their school in South Korea. However, the level of English taught is minimal. During their schooling, the students do not have an opportunity to advance or challenge their linguistic skills.”

Ms. Han learned about KCC’s College’s College For Kids Program through her friend who lives in Brooklyn near the college campus.

While attending the College For Kids program for four-weeks, Ms. Han and the six students explored New York City, visiting the Guggenheim Museum, the Empire State Building, and Central Park.  Their favorite classes in the College For Kids program were tennis and cricket.  This was their first exposure to the two sports.  In South Korea they‘ve only played badminton, not tennis.
